[Music] LIU Jia Chang and YOU Ya -- In the Rain

YOU Ya and LIU Jia Chang

ZHEN Zhen

1. Except for those with roots in Hong Kong or Macau, most Chinese do not have a English name.

The usual practice for most Chinese is to use the transliteration of the Chinese name as their English name.

But there are two annoying things about using transliteration as English name:

(a) The first one is the loss of information from Chinese to English.

Like most English names such as Michael or Susanna, one can usually tell from a Chinese name whether the person is male or female.

This information is usually lost in transliteration.

Without prior knowledge, can you tell whether "Liu Jia Chang" is male or female?

(b) The second annoying thing is in the other direction - from English to Chinese.

Because of the one to many relations between the English transliteration and the Chinese, one usually cannot tell from the English transliteration what the original Chinese name is.

So for those not in the know, LIU Jia Chang is male.

"LIU" being the last name and "Jia Chang" the given name.

YOU Ya is female.

"YOU" being the last name and "Ya" being the given name.

2. Liu Jia Chang was born in 1943 and he was active in the Taiwanese music scene between the mid-1960s to early 1990s.

LIu Jia Chang is also multi-talented: besides composing music and lyrics and singing many of his own compositions, Liu was also a movie director and actor.

Liu Jia Chang is married to one of the most beautiful Taiwanese actress of the 1970s: ZHEN Zhen.

But there was a darker side to Liu's personality: besides having gambling problems, Liu was involved in some shady business dealings.

3. Quite a few Taiwanese singers in the 1970s and 1980s are considered "students" of Liu Jia Chang.

You Ya is one of Liu's first students.

You Ya was very popular in Taiwan in the 1970s and 1980s.

Both the music and lyrics of "In the Rain" ("在雨中") was composed by Liu Jia Chang and the sound of this song is quite distinctive of Taiwanese music of the 1970s:

You Ya did not seem to age much.

6. The lyrics are hard-subbed into the video in this version:

7. Not that the video model is not beautiful, but the music video is incongruent with the music and lyrics:

(女) 有相聚   也有分離
(男) 人生本   是一齣戲
(女) 有歡笑   也有哭泣

你說人生憂鬱   我不言語
只有默默的承受這一切
承受數不盡的春來冬去
Repeat *
